Voluntary Dry Pet Food Recall – Iams & Eukanuba

CINCINNATI–(BUSINESS WIRE)–The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) has voluntarily recalled specific lots of dry pet food because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. These lots were distributed in the United States and represent roughly one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) of annual production. No Salmonella-related illnesses have been reported to date in association with these product lots.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

This issue is limited to the specific dry pet food lot codes listed below. This affects roughly one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) of total annual production. The affected product was distributed to select retailers across the United States. These products were made during a 10-day window at a single manufacturing site. P&G’s routine testing determined that some products made during this timeframe have the potential for Salmonella contamination. As a precautionary measure, P&G is recalling the potentially impacted products made during this timeframe. No other dry dog food, dry cat food, dog or cat canned wet food, biscuits/treats or supplements are affected by this announcement.

P&G is retrieving these products as a precautionary measure. Consumers who purchased a product listed below should stop using the product and discard it and contact P&G toll-free at 800-208-0172 (Monday – Friday, 9 AM to 6 PM ET), or via website at www.iams.com or www.eukanuba.com. Natura Pet Issues Voluntary Recall of Specialized Dry Pet Foods Due to Possible Health Risk

FREMONT, NEBRASKA, June 18, 2013 – Natura Pet Products is voluntarily recalling specific lots of dry pet food because it has the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella.

Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract
symptoms.

Dog Collar Tips and Advice

dog_walkA dog collar is standard wear for dogs. But merely putting on a collar shouldn’t be the last though on the subject.  There are many different types of collars, the most popular being nylon or leather. A well fitting collar is important. The collar should fit well enough that it it can’t be slipped off by the wearer, but not too tight. You should be able to easily slide your fingers between your dog’s neck and the collar. If you intend to keep the collar on your dog at all times (which is a good idea in order to keep ID tags on your dog in case he gets lost), make sure it is a safety collar that will break or release if the dog becomes snagged, to prevent strangulation. Likewise, if you are walking your dog, a collar with a metal buckle is preferable to a quick release or break away if your dog is prone to pulling or lunging.

For dogs who do pull or lunge, a harness is a better choice over a collar. The harness will prevent your dog from choking herself. There are many types of harnesses, but some of the best type of harnesses are the type that connect the leash at the dog’s chest, rather than back. A chest connecting harness such as the Walk Your Dog With Love – World’s Best Dog Harness*, doesn’t allow the dog to get the leverage to pull against the harness (think of how pulling dogs and sled dogs pull… they wear harnesses which connect at the back of the shoulders.)

A word about chain collars. Never use a choke collar or pinch collar as a regular collar. These are training collars and should only be worn during training sessions. Since they are chains and are designed to tighten, if the collar becomes caught or hooked onto something, it could cause strangulation.

Another danger with some collars is a rare but all too real danger of dogs getting a jaw entangled in another dog’s collar during play. The scene becomes a horrifying struggle for survival, with the entangled dog fighting in pain to free his jaw, while the other dog slowly strangles as the collar tightens during the struggle. Breakaway collars, or  no collars at all, are safer for dogs during playtime.

In addition to a collar, it is also a good idea to look into microchipping your pet. A microchip is very tiny, about the size of a grain of rice, and implanted with a needle just under the skin. The microchip can be read by a device that a vet, animal control officer or animal shelter uses to reunite found pets with their owners. Many vets and clinics offer the service for a small fee, and it is a permanent way for your pet to be identified and returned to
you in the event they are lost.

Chick Brooder Heat Safety Tips

Chantecler chicksSpring is the time of year for many folks to start hatching chicks or buying chicks from the feed store or hatchery. These little chicks cannot keep themselves warm without mom, so artificial heat is necessary for their survival.  The most traditional heat source are heat lamps. But not just any heat lamp is sufficient… or safe.

When purchasing a brooder heat lamp, make sure it is a quality lamp with a ceramic fixture where the bulb screws in. Some of the cheap lamps have plastic where the bulb screws in, which can overheat and become a fire hazard when the lamp is left on for a long period of time.

If you are getting your older heat lamps out of storage, check it carefully to make sure everything is secure and working properly, and that there are no frayed or chewed wires (mice love to chew the plastic that surrounds wires).

Use a proper bulb with your heat lamp. A 250 watt red lamp is most common, will keep the chicks warm, and the red coloring will help discourage chicks from pecking each other. I’ve had a lot of success with a regular 60 or 75 watt bulb and a large plastic sweater box or tote for keeping younger chicks warm inside.  One important word of warning:  DO NOT use Teflon coated bulbs with ANY chickens… chicks or adults. They will kill your chickens. For more information on this, read this article on backyardchickens.com.

It is also very important to make sure your heater is securely fastened. It should be an adequate distance from walls, floors and can’t be broken or knocked over by animals or people.

A good & safe alternative to regular heat bulbs is a product like the Sweeter Heater, an infratherm pet heater that gives off adequate heat without the dangers of overheating or breaking.

Spring unfortunately comes with a sharp upswing in heat lamp related fires which can destroy coops, barns, homes and destroy lives. Skimping on brooder heat is never a good idea if it may mean sacrificing safety. Be sure to make sure your heater is in tip-top shape, good quality, and very securely fastened.

Enjoy your chicks!
